Health. The individual Health insurance operations reported a $35 million underwriting loss during 2007 compared to a $32 million underwriting loss in 2006. Underwriting results are impacted by increases in active life reserves, primarily for Long-Term Care. Active life reserves are required for level premium long-duration contracts, similar to whole life insurance. Excluding Long-Term Care, the Health operations reported a $13 million underwriting gain in 2007. Net written premium was $752 million in 2007, down 0.1 percent from the previous year. Application production (excluding Humana® alliance) was below plan, decreasing for the fifth consecutive year and at its lowest level in ten years. The number of Health policies in force decreased more than 18,000 during the year, the greatest annual decline since 1997.
