In 2002, we began measuring our overall greenhouse gas emissions intensity and reporting our results to the Department of Energy in association with the Business Roundtable’s Climate RESOLVE initiative. By 2008, we reduced our emissions intensity by 46 percent, more than two times our goal of an 18 percent reduction by 2012.
But we didn’t stop there.
We added hybrid-electric models, flexible fuel models and models powered by four-cylinder engines to our company fleet. This earned us recognition in 2008 by Automotive Fleet magazine as the third largest non-governmental alternative fuel fleet.
Our Bloomington, Illinois facilities provide employee shuttles between buildings, and we coordinate employee commuter van-pools. Annually this equates to over 400,000 employee trips.
We support telecommuting, online learning, and paperless communication.
The State Farm® Austin, Texas facility is recognized by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency for voluntarily buying renewable energy to power that site.
The Austin facility - which has participated in the EPA’s Green Power program since 2006 - placed 41st in the EPA’s July 2009 ranking of the top Fortune 500 purchasers of power generated from renewable resources.
We install energy efficient appliances and equipment. We continually review our energy options to utilize more energy-efficient technologies and fuels. Our Corporate Headquarters and Murfreesboro, TN, Operations Center are ENERGY STAR buildings.
