In 1988, State Farm developed an environmentally safe plan to dispose of outdated terminals and computer screens. Since then, we have continued to develop and promote recycling and waste management plans that benefit our company and our neighbors while being environmentally conscious.
In 2007, 3.7 million lbs. of computers and electronic equipment were diverted from landfills.
We recycle batteries, aluminum, glass, plastic, cardboard, paper, metal, fluorescent tubes, printer/toner cartridges and carpet at most major facilities. With our no carpet in landfill policy, State Farm has diverted 1 million square yards of carpet from landfills. We reuse pallets, packing materials, and corrugated boxes.
Some of our properties have storm water management systems which divert runoff into a retention pond. This water is then reused for irrigation.
At our Greeley, Colorado major building project, the general contractor diverted 55% of construction waste materials from landfills.
