After the Storms
Claims response
- Nearly 7,000 State Farm catastrophe claims representatives, State Farm Agents, and independent adjusters – the largest catastrophe response in the industry – worked in the affected areas of the Gulf Coast.
- State Farm has paid more than $6.0 billion in claims as a result of the four 2005 hurricanes, half of that for damage related to Hurricane Katrina alone. This doesn’t include payments made under the National Flood Insurance Program.
- Our response went beyond claim handling – deploying gas, water and mobile offices – to ensure local resources were kept available for local residents.
- State Farm handled over 600,000 claims arising out of the four hurricanes that made landfall in the Gulf Coast in 2005. That’s on top of the 12-13 million non-catastrophe claims that State Farm handles in a typical year.
- Approximately 99 percent of the total claims have been completed.
- More than 295,000 homeowners, commercial and National Flood Insurance Program claims, and 99,000 auto claims reported as a result of Katrina alone.
- Mediation has helped to resolve many of the outstanding claims. More than 1,500 State Farm claims from Katrina were heard in the Mississippi Mediation Program, of which 1,272 have ended in agreement. In Louisiana, more than 2,030 State Farm claims from Katrina and Rita were heard in the Louisiana Mediation Program, of which 1,273 have ended in agreement.
- Rita resulted in more than 85,000 reported claims.
State Farm agents
- State Farm agents and employees, many of whom were affected themselves, put aside their own situations to help our customers. More than 2,000 State Farm agents and employees live and work in Mississippi and Louisiana.
- State Farm agents located across North America provided customers displaced by the storm with monetary help for their immediate expenses. Customers could walk into or call any of the nearly 17,000 State Farm agent locations for assistance.
State Farm giving
- Nearly 15,000 State Farm associates contributed more than $2.6 million to the American Red Cross Relief Fund following the hurricanes, an amount that State Farm matched and exceeded. In total, State Farm and its associates donated nearly $6.2 million to the relief effort.
State Farm in Gulf Coast Communities
- State Farm continues to work to improve building codes, and with key organizations such as Habitat for Humanity and others to help promote storm safety and encourage the rebuilding of communities along the Gulf Coast.
