State Farm® Seeks Inspirational People to Honor in its Embrace Life® Awards

Bloomington, Ill., January 22, 2009 -- Even in difficult economic times, it’s risky for people to cut corners on protecting their families. And yet, a third of Americans – 32 percent – don’t have life insurance.

To help draw attention to the need for life insurance, State Farm opened its sixth annual Embrace Life Awards call-for-entries period. The contest welcomes nominations for both men and women who have lost a spouse, guardian or parent, and renewed their lives and inspired others through their perseverance.  There will be 13 Embrace Life Award nominees this year and each will receive a $10,000 cash prize.

“There is no doubt that these are difficult economic times for everyone – but life insurance is not the item on which to make cutbacks or worse, eliminate altogether,” said Carole Brody Fleet, past Embrace Life Award honoree. “It is not a question of "if" loss is going to happen, but instead a question of "when." Don't make the mistake of assuming that life insurance is unnecessary, unaffordable or both.”

Contest participants are invited to nominate an individual by submitting an essay (of no more than 1,000 words) between January 5, 2009 and March 2, 2009.  Entrants are not limited to the number of people they can nominate and can nominate themselves.

“We look forward to hearing stories of perseverance and learning valuable life lessons from those who have experienced loss and gone on to do truly great things,” said Susan Waring, Executive Vice President & Chief Administrative Officer – Life, and Vice President – Health for State Farm Insurance Companies. “These stories allow us to celebrate amazing people and help State Farm spread the good word about the importance of life insurance and planning for the unexpected.”
