Disaster Preparedness is Key to Survival
State Farm Insurance wants to remind California residents that preparing for the next major disaster is essential to survival and recovery.

If a disaster struck today, would you and your family be ready? Surviving and recovering from a major disaster will depend in large part on being prepared. Recent earthquakes act as reminders to Californians that a disaster can strike anywhere at any time.
No matter where you are when a disaster hits, you must have the plans and tools in place to make it on your own for a minimum of three to seven days. Preparing for the unexpected makes sense. To help you, State Farm offers the following Disaster Preparedness Tips:

- Preparedness works best in advance, not after a disaster
- Create a family disaster plan that includes:
- Evacuation plan that establishes an emergency meeting place
- A family communications plan
- Assemble family emergency supply kits (home & car) to include:
- Food for your family and your pets
- Water- typically one gallon per person per day
- First aid items
- Clothing/blankets
- Flashlights/batteries
- Personal hygiene supplies/toiletries
- Battery powered radio
- Fire extinguisher
- Small tool kit
- Secure your living space:
- Make sure your water heater is tied down
- Know where your gas shut off valve is located
- Create defensible space around your home to assist emergency responders
- Protect important family documents/records in water proof container
- Complete a home inventory list and document with video and photos. When it's done, be sure to keep this inventory in a safe deposit box or other location outside your home.
- Visit your insurance agent to be sure your coverage meets your family’s needs
