State Farm Family of Companies Sharing of Information

Q: What is the family of companies that you may share information with?
A: Our family of companies includes our auto, fire, life, and health insurance companies, mutual funds companies and bank. You can see a complete list in our "Notice of Privacy Policy" or on our website at www.statefarm.com.

Q: What does it mean that State Farm can share information with your family of companies as "permitted or required by law?"
A: The provisions of Gramm-Leach-Bliley (GLB) set forth two standards for sharing non-public personal information. These standards have been defined in our State Farm "Notice of Privacy Policy". We do not share customer information outside State Farm for marketing purposes.

We do share customer information with third parties such as:

  • Auto repair shops
  • Roofers
  • Defense counsel (attorneys)
  • And many others who service our customers and assist us in conducting our business.

This is permitted under GLB under the category of Safe Harbors because the drafters of the law knew this kind of information sharing would be required to conduct business and give service to customers. This is an example of "permitted by law sharing."

Examples of situations where we share information within State Farm's family of companies "as required by law" are:

  • When insurers must report information to third parties, such as government agencies to comply with state laws involving anti-fraud or anti-theft
  • When insurers are required to share customer information based upon issuance of a subpoena from a court or other government agency

Q: What if I don't want you to share information about me with your family of companies?
A: If you do not want us to share within the State Farm family of companies certain information we obtain outside of State Farm such as your driving record call us at 1-800-865-6035. It may take six to eight weeks after we receive your request to process it.

Q: Why should I allow State Farm to share my customer information with other State Farm companies?
A: Because, not allowing us to share within the State Farm family of companies, may inconvenience you and impact the quality of prompt service you receive. We may have to collect certain information about you twice to underwrite your policy. For example, if you are an auto policyholder we may have to ask you again about your driving record to underwrite a boat policy. Or, for example, if you apply for a large life insurance policy and a large disability income policy, we may have to ask you for financial records twice.

Q: How long does my "Do Not Share" request stay in force?
A: Once put into effect, your "Do Not Share" request remains in force until you tell us otherwise.

Q. If I have already requested "Do Not Share," do I need to again?
A. Your "Do Not Share" preference will remain in effect until you tell us otherwise.

Q. I received multiple privacy mailings. Do I need to use each customer identification number to enter my decision?
A. If your mailings contain different customer identification numbers or names you will need to specify your preference for each account. To eliminate future duplicate mailings you will need to contact your agent.

Q. I lost my customer identification number on my Privacy Policy letter. Can you still record my preference?
A. We can still record your preference using your name and address information.

Q. How does this affect joint accounts?
A. One joint account holder or policyholder can bind the decision not to share on joint accounts and insurance policies. For example, if you and your spouse are joint insureds on an auto policy and you choose not to share, your decision will bind your spouse only for the joint accounts or joint policies. Individual accounts and policies will not be affected by a spouse's decision not to share.

Q. How is this different than the Bank Protecting Your Information Form I completed when I signed up for a bank account?
A. This notice replaces and broadens the Bank "Do No Share" policy. The Protecting Your Information form dealt only with certain customer information policies for the State Farm. It has been replaced with our State Farm Privacy Policy, which explains the customer information policies for the State Farm family of companies.
