Families in Need Found a Good Neighbor to Ensure Their Children’s Safety

Local police officers, staff from Baby Safe Fresno, and Agent Joji Thomas and his staff help local families in Clovis at the child safety seat inspection.

Ninety percent of child safety seats in Fresno County are not being used correctly. To turn this statistic around, State Farm partnered with the Clovis Police Department by hosting a car-seat safety inspection. “We are grateful we can help those in the community who need these child safety devices, and help make sure young children are buckled up correctly through the safety check-ups funded by the Office of Traffic Safety,” said Clovis Police Chief Janet Davis.

The car-seat checkup and installations took place at the United Way parking lot in Fresno as part of the Safe Kids Central Valley Coalition. Ten families, identified through United Way and the Center for New Americans, received free child-passenger safety or booster seats and had them properly installed in their cars.

State Farm was honored to provide a grant that sponsored two local technicians through the week-long child passenger safety training program put on by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). State Farm Agent Joji Thomas and his team members, along with Public Affairs Specialist Greg Sherlock were on hand for the safety inspection.

Technicians from Clovis Police Department were joined by others from Safe Kids, including new graduates from the NHTSA Standardized Child Passenger Training Program, to check the first 50 children to arrive in safety or booster seats – ensuring they were properly buckled.

The check-up was part of the Clovis Police Department’s Juvenile Traffic Safety and Education program grant. It was the second of four check-ups aimed at increasing the public’s awareness of the importance of securing their children before heading out on the road.
