State Farm Agents Help Students Ensure Their Future

State Farm agents are helping local students and families understand the mechanics and value of insurance. Through Make it Possible workshops sponsored by State Farm Bank and put on by local State Farm agents, hundreds of students and families are hearing the insurance value message.

Make It Possible workshops teach financial literacy to citizens in California who may not have basic budgeting skills or a foundational understanding of some of the financial products available and why they’re needed.

Norco Agent Melanie Smith-Rice worked with JFK High School in Norco to set up a series of workshops to build basic budgeting skills, as well as an understanding of insurance and its value. On October 25 Melanie explained the basics of auto insurance and loans to the students. The students asked great questions during the class, but it was after the class when she received the most poignant question.

A young man who was in the process of rebuilding a classic Ford Mustang with his father explained that he was going to be responsible for the insurance. Smith-Rice was able to provide enough information for him that he decided to come into her office with his father to provide her with his grade report and view the steer clear DVDs – all ensuring Good Student and Safe Driver discounts on his insurance.

Smith-Rice said, “Exposing high school students to the complicated world of insurance and the intricacy of money management is rewarding and challenging, but arming them with this information now might help them make better financial decisions later.”

Riverside Agent Adolfo Saldana has been working with the Centro de Niño’s in Riverside to provide Make It Possible workshops. Centro de Niño’s is a daycare facility for low income Hispanic families, many who do not have the basics of financial literacy. Saldana puts the workshops on simultaneously in English and Spanish, taking questions and providing information in manner that is easy to understand.

Since beginning these workshops Saldana has helped several families with their life, auto and mutual fund needs. In addition, he has explained rollover IRAs to several potential clients.

Saldana said, “The families that use the Centro de Niño’s are generally first generation families. I really enjoy helping folks who may have been neglected by other insurance and financial institutions because they are considered low income. We all deserve to be treated like clients.”

The Latino market is growing by leaps and bounds in California. State Farm is committed to understanding their needs. By taking the time to build a relationship with this audience we demonstrate our commitment to being a part of our communities.
