Marking a somber occasion – the anniversary of 9/11 – the LA Urban League held its annual Disaster Preparedness Fair at the Crenshaw Plaza Mall in the Baldwin Hills area of Los Angeles. A strong message prevailed at the fair: If you aren’t concerned about your own safety, please be prepared for your kids’ sake!

As a universal concern, disaster preparedness becomes critical to preventing or reducing loss of life and property wherever and whenever possible. State Farm and several key public and private entities in the South LA/Crenshaw community helped underscore just how important it is to be prepared.

State Farm, in partnership with the Los Angeles Fire Department, Los Angeles Police Department, California Highway Patrol, KJLH Radio, and Survivors Are Us helped to educate the community about the importance of preparing for natural disasters. Kids Are 1st was a driving force behind the theme of this fair. Their mission, as stated on their website, is simple – “to create an awareness of how to keep children safe.” At the event, almost 250 children, youth, and adults received free identification kits from Kids Are 1st.

State Farm participants included Compton Agent Bryson Hill, who was interviewed on KJLH Radio, Public Affairs Specialist Samona Caldwell, and Los Angeles Agents Karla Greene and Stephan Buckley.

Greene said, “It was so great to see so many members of the South LA Community come out to support the Disaster Preparedness Fair. Also, having KJLH broadcast the event and Congresswoman Diane Watson there solidified the importance of being prepared for emergencies and disasters and having the appropriate insurance to help you recover.”

State Farm and the LA Urban League have a valuable long-term relationship, and share a host of common values. The LAUL’s Neighborhoods@Work program is committed to ensuring that families are prepared for any emergency.

LA Urban League’s Adrianne Sears said, “State Farm’s participation in the Disaster Preparedness Fair was critical to the South LA/Crenshaw community. State Farm helped the community understand the importance of being prepared for an emergency/disaster and the necessity of having insurance for your home and contents. We value our partnership with State Farm and were proud to have them as a presenting sponsor for the event.”
