State Farm and Univision TV came together to sponsor the Cuentas Claras (“Clarity with your Accounts”) Town Hall to promote financial literacy. The August 20 meeting was presented to Oakland-area community members interested in learning how to improve their personal financial situation. This Spanish-language community forum was free to the public and open to everyone. Attendees had the opportunity to learn about credit, building financial wealth, and foreclosure prevention.

The event was hosted by the Unity Council at its Oakland Fruitvale Village neighborhood. Nearly 150 attendees filled a room where a panel presented and responded to questions on a variety of financial literacy issues. The panel was comprised of community members, State Farm agents, and Financial Expert and New York Times Best-Selling Author Julie Stav.

The forum ended with the random selection of five winners, each receiving a $100 Visa® gift card. Prior to and after the panel discussion, attendees were treated to breakfast and an opportunity to network with the panelists. The two-hour event was taped and will be aired on Univision TV in the future.

State Farm associates contributing to this community event included Public Affairs Specialists Sevag Sarkissian, Eddie C. Martinez, and Tia Wells, along with Agents David Recoder and Jose Cano, and Agency Field Executive Paul Hong.

“This Cuentas Claras event was very successful, and I was honored to be a part of it,” Cano said. “Community members appreciated being given the opportunity to highlight financial issues and raise questions that many people have to deal with on a daily basis, yet may not know where to turn to or where to begin.”

Cuentas Claras Town Halls will continue to be held throughout 2011. Click here to learn about upcoming meetings sponsored by State Farm and Univision TV.
