Youth Entrepreneurs Kansas

The primary focus of Youth Entrepreneurs of Kansas (YEK) is to reach at-risk youth throughout Kansas. Without YEK many of those students would not have access to resources outside of the regular classroom that would teach them skills to start or excel in a personal business. State Farm partners with YEK on various programs like “Dare to Dream” educational workshop and their many volunteer programs. “Dare to Dream” brings students together for a day of motivation by nationally known entrepreneurs and speakers. The students learn business and interpersonal skills development in hands-on, breakout sessions. Students participate in many experiential learning activities, such as field trips, where the students see the workings and relationships between businesses and people. YEK students are taught they can take ownership of their futures, create their own pathways out of poverty, and to give back to their communities.

Emporia State/Jones Institute for Educational Excellence

The Great Plains Center for National Teacher Certification in the Jones Institute for Educational Excellence at Emporia State University offers a program of professional development at no cost for teachers in Kansas going through the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards (NBPTS) assessment process. National Board Certification is a way for the teaching profession to recognize highly accomplished teaching practice. A certificate awarded by the NBPTS attests that a teacher has been judged by his or her peers as one who meets high and rigorous professional standards. He or she has demonstrated the ability, in a variety of settings, to make sound professional judgments about students' best interests and to act effectively on those judgments. State Farm firmly believes that strong communities are built from the partnerships within each community. Teachers are in a position to make a real difference in children's lives. They must be equipped, encouraged, and empowered to help young people achieve their full potential. The NBPTS program at Emporia State University helps adequately prepare Kansas teachers to become better teachers.

SafeKids

Safe Kids Kansas Inc., is a nonprofit Coalition of over 70 statewide and regional organizations and businesses dedicated to preventing unintentional injuries. The goal of Safe Kids Kansas is to protect Kansas children by preventing accidental injuries. While Kansas children are safer from unintentional injury now than they were a decade ago, preventable injury remains the leading killer of Kansas children ages 1-14. Proper use of restraints greatly increases the chance of survival while decreasing the potential for injury. Through the partnership State Farm has with Safe Kids Kansas, they are able to hold safety events such as their "Buckle Up" and "Cycle Smart" programs. State Farm has a strong commitment in Kansas to keeping kids safe, especially when it comes to seat belts and car seat safety. Safe Kids administers the standardized National Child Passenger Safety (CPS) Certification program. State Farm works closely with Safe Kids Kansas to share the message of child passenger safety and sponsor child seat safety events. State Farm is proud to support those efforts by offering grants that facilitate community Car Seat Technician training classes and care seat checkups. Through our partnership, there are more kids riding in car seats that are installed correctly.

Community Housing Services

Community Housing Services (CHS) provides affordable quality housing and first time homeownership to low income individuals. CHS offers educational programs that allow interested residents the chance to learn about the home purchase process, the credit process, leadership skills, and the maintenance and upkeep that goes with being a homeowner. The CHS programs afford the resident a chance and an opportunity to ask questions and seek answers before making the decision on home buying. CHS also works with clients on keeping their home through their foreclosure prevention education. As a Homeownership Center they are a one stop shop that offers full cycle lending and education that takes the client from the first step to the last in purchasing and keeping their home. CHS, Inc. is a member of the national NeighborWorks network, which creates opportunities for people to improve their lives and strengthen their communities by providing access to homeownership and safe and affordable rental housing. State Farm has a long history with CHS, and by working together to improve education in the communities in which we live and do business. We are building bridges of goodwill and teaching community members to become more financially sound.

Greater KC Hispanic Collaborative

Besides providing funding to the GKCHC “BizFest” event each year, State Farm agents and employees spend time at the event helping students learn about the business world. BizFest helps young people turn their hobbies and skills into profit-making ventures. From start to finish, the program teaches students, who often start the program withdrawn or with little self- esteem, the fundamentals of solid entrepreneurial and leadership skills. Volunteers work with students to improve their financial literacy and preparedness; increase their workforce readiness skills; and help to give them a renewed sense of confidence. BizFest helps students gain economic literacy, improved skills in math, reading, writing, and verbal communication. BizFest also helps students learn about proper work attire and etiquette. State Farm is proud to be involved with BizFest and the GKCHC.
