Now - 12/31/2011 in Buchanan, MI. In this era of computer simulations of reality, the importance of student opportunities for learning outside the walls of the classroom cannot be overemphasized. Research shows clearly that making connections to the real world is an important key to student learning. Their physical labor will give students a real sense of ownership of this local, natural asset. When complete, the grade school students will again experience the sight, sounds and vibrations of an operational 19th century mill.

The success of the project is easily measured by quantitative measurements of stream quality--water temperature, turbidity and biodiversity. Renewed operation of the water wheel is another measure. In terms of this specific proposal, the accomplishments of the students in terms of their physical efforts and participation are also easily observed and recorded. The students' improved understanding of stream ecology and beneficial stream characteristics will be judged by their teachers. Hence, each teacher will be requested at the end of the project to provide an assessment of the value of participation in this project.

The Outdoor Education Director writes in part "Research shows that making connections to the real world is an important key to student learning. Pears Mill gives us an outstanding, cost effective source for real world learning." Since beginning the annual Creek clean up, the health of the stream has improved considerably as judged by quantitative measures.

State Farm is a strong advocate for Education, and Service-Learning is an intricate part of education.
