State Farm Donation Allows Teens to Become First Responders
(Santa Rosa, CA, November 28, 2011) - The well-detailed Teen Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) program is expanding its reach in the North Bay, thanks to a $50,000 grant from State Farm Insurance Company. Presentation of the donation will take place on Wednesday, December 7 at 1:30 p.m. The location will be the Sonoma County Office of Education - 5340 Skylane Boulevard, in Santa Rosa.
The classroom based training will be two-fold with instruction for trainers being held in January and student training to follow shortly afterwards. Instructor training will include CERT volunteers, teachers, students and first responders from Sonoma and Mendocino Counties while the student classes will primarily encompass high schools in Sonoma County. Upon completion of the program, students become certified to become first responders during a disaster. A partnership between the Sonoma and Mendocino County Offices of Education will integrate the involvement of CERT instruction and student participation in the program.
“Preparing for disasters has long been a top priority with State Farm and these types of programs are now more important than ever,” said State Farm Agency Field Executive Mike Mutch. “Natural disasters are happening more frequently and bringing with them greater amounts of damage. It is extremely encouraging to see young adults taking advantage of opportunities like this.”
Outreach for this program will reach several thousand people including students and community organizations through hands-on interaction and media exposure. The training for trainers segment will include approximately four dozen future instructors while student training will involve over 100 students. The program includes a professionally produced DVD from IlluminaVisual involving graduate students from Expression College in Emeryville. The visual presentation will be distributed through hard copy and social media outlets including YouTube®.
State Farm’s donation comes from their Good Neighbor Citizenship program. The grant program focuses primarily on safety, education and community development. For more information about the GNC program, contact Lonny Haskins or go to Statefarm.com.
