Local Youth Can Learn Biking Safety Techniques

Laurel, Montana. May 27, 2011 - Every year, approximately 300,000 school aged children need emergency medical attention after sustaining injuries caused by bike related injuries, and at least 10,000 children have injuries that require a few days in the hospital.

Bicycle safety procedures and techniques are too often forgotten by both the rider and roadway users. Occasionally, we observe young bicyclists on the road who are either unable to control their bicycles or are unaware of the rules of the road.

Local business and community partners including the Laurel Walmart, State Farm Agent Tom Maack, and the Laurel Elementary PTA have collaborated efforts to sponsor a Bicycle Rodeo Safety Day event on Saturday, June 4th 10:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m. at the Laurel Walmart Parking Lot. Address: 101 Bernhardt Rd., Laurel, Montana.

“State Farm is excited to help offer a fun way for the local youth to learn about bicycle safety. The event is a great learning experience for the youth as well as a way for parents to learn more about safety techniques to keep children safe during the busy summer months,” Tom Maack, State Farm Agent.

Tom’s office team, Walmart employees, and a host of community volunteers will provide hands-on bicycle and helmet safety instruction, inspections and drawings for fun prizes, including the opportunity to win a new youth bicycle.

Families should plan to bring their own bicycles and helmets. Parents must be present while the child participates in the safety bike event. After their bicycles are inspected for safety, they will practice such cycling skills as short radius turning, straight-line control, and slow speed control.

State Farm has provided a $1000 safety grant to Laurel Elementary PTA to purchase bicycle helmets for families with children who cannot afford proper safety helmets.
