Marsh Valley High School Combats Teens' No. 1 Killer

Pocatello, ID, May 2, 2011 - Students at Marsh Valley High School have earned a $3,600 grant from State Farm Insurance to educate their peers and the community about the dangers of distracted driving.

Marsh Valley High School is amongst one of two Idaho schools earning “Shift into Safety” grants from State Farm, the nation’s largest auto insurer and a leader in teen driver safety efforts.  The company offered schools grants of $2,000 to $5,000 to craft campaigns to help change teens’ thinking, and behavior, behind the wheel.

State Farm Agents Travis Chase, Summer Jackman, and Tony McLaughlin will present the check to the students at a school assembly on Tuesday, May 3rd at 3:00 p.m.

Led by Advisors Becky Sorensen, Clark Robison, and Doug Armstrong, Marsh Valley students earned a grant for their project, “NO TD’S! Texting, Drinking & Drugs, Don’t Mix!”, which will tackle the problems of distracted driving: obstacles such as drinking, drugs and texting while driving. Students managing the project will convey their multifaceted message through student trainings, poster contest, and a teen driver safety school assembly.

“We are grateful to State Farm for providing our students with the opportunity to grow and learn!” adds Becky Sorensen, Marsh Valley High School Financial Secretary. “"We were so excited to receive this grant as it has provided us with funds to bring back programs that help raise awareness amongst students and parents about the perils of alcohol and drugs use as well as distracted driving”.
