Santa Maria, CA - Pioneer Valley High School is seeing green, literally and figuratively. The school has just been awarded $5,000 as part of State Farm California’s Environmental Grant Program. The school will be recognized for their environmental detectives program.

A check presentation will take place at the high school on Wednesday, March 2, 2011 at 12:30 p.m. The school is located at 675 Panther Drive in Santa Maria.

PV High is one of five schools in California to receive the State Farm grant, which goes to support student-led programs that focus on community and environmental efforts. The program will monitor the water quality at River Oaks Park.

“I am very excited to bring this new project to Pioneer Valley High School and Santa Maria. The high school students will now have opportunities they otherwise would not have had because of the generosity and vision of State Farm,” said Riccardo Magni, Science Department Head at PVHS and writer of the grant.

Programs considered for the grants needed to address an environmental initiative in driving, recycling, promoting healthy lifestyles, or community outreach. The programs also included intentional ties to classroom academics while addressing green issues.

“State Farm is committed to advancing education and these environmental grants further support our work in the service-learning field,” said Donna Randolph, Santa Maria State Farm Agent. “We applaud the efforts of all the schools who submitted grants and look forward to seeing each of the winning schools bring their visions to reality!”
