Louisville, KY., September 07, 2011 - Adelante Hispanic Achievers is receiving a $5,000 grant to support an educational program for middle and high school Hispanic students in Jefferson County. The Mentoring & Enrichment/College Readiness program is designed to help them become high academic achievers who are prepared for college success. “State Farm believes all children deserve an education that helps them reach their greatest potential. This funding will help provide students with the support they need to succeed,” said State Farm Agent Bill Moriarty who delivered the grant check on behalf of State Farm.
Participants enrolled in the mentoring program meet every Saturday during the school year, attending workshops that focus on topics such as ACT or SAT preparation and career exploration. This is the seventh year for the program. “Adelante Hispanic Achievers is truly appreciative to State Farm for its community spirit. State Farm's generous support will provide Hispanic/Latino students with academic resources, life skills workshops and career exposure to enhance their education and help them become leaders in our community,” said Mara Maldonado, Director of Adelante Hispanic Achievers.
Beyond providing local support whenever possible, State Farm is also a partner in the America’s Promise Alliance, a national campaign designed to improve the high school dropout rate in the U.S. According to America’s Promise Alliance, approximately 1.3 million students drop out each year - averaging 7,200 every school day. Among minority students, the problem is even more severe with nearly 50 percent of African American and Hispanic students not completing high school on time. Experts say dropping out of high school affects not just students and their families, but the country overall - including businesses, government and communities. The Alliance for Excellent Education estimates high school dropouts from the Class of 2006-07 will cost the U.S. more than $329 billion in lost wages, taxes, and productivity over their lifetimes.
