Murfreesboro, Tenn., August 9, 2011 For the 10th year, 32 Rutherford County students rounded out their summer vacations and headed back to school with more leadership experience and business acumen thanks to the 2011 State Farm Summer Business Camp.
Sponsored by State Farm and administered by the Business Education Partnership Foundation, the camp exposes students to the business concepts and leadership skills needed to develop and pitch a business plan to a panel of judges who evaluate the viability of the proposals.
BEP Executive Director Lee Rennick and her team enlisted the help of business leaders from across the county to lead workshops about the intricacies of operating businesses of all kinds.
Students were given lessons in a variety of business practices that ranged from golf lessons at Old Fort Park Golf Club to public speaking seminars at State Farm, and an introduction to finance at Mid-South Bank.
By the end of the camp, students also received instruction on crafting the perfect mission statement, and the basics of marketing, sales and human resources.
This year, members of the "Swirly Top" team took home the top prize, a tablet computer and a gift certificate for Microsoft programs. Their idea for a 50's themed soft-serve ice cream shop that caters to families impressed the judges with its strong financial plan and detailed HR and marketing strategies.
Jeff Shay, Vice President of Operations, presented the winners with their prizes and the Business Education Partnership with a $15,000 State Farm Grant.
