Conyngham, PA, March 24, 2011 – State Farm presented a Safe Neighbors grant today for $1,000 to the Hazleton chapter of the American Red Cross. The grant money will be used to purchase training material for the chapter’s school health and safety programs and to assist life saving certification. Local State Farm agents, Dan Eury and Gary Marsch of Conyngham; State Farm Agency Field Executive, Gary Swanson; and Red Cross Executive Director, Joyce Ann Bradbury attended the presentation.

The grant will be used to assist in CPR, AED, and first aid training throughout Hazleton Area high schools. The Red Cross’ main objective is to train more than 700 ninth grade students in four school systems in these lifesaving programs. According to the Red Cross, in a physical emergency, it is necessary to get oxygen in the body within four to six minutes. “I am very pleased to see the Red Cross and State Farm partner in this effort,” said Conyngham agent, Dan Eury. “As a board member with the Red Cross chapter and insurance agent, I have seen the impact emergency response can have on lives. Every second counts.”

This Red Cross program started with one school in 1996. Students are certified through written examination and hands-on skills testing. With more than 10,000 students certified, the program has been a success. “We are extremely grateful for the support we have received from State Farm,” said Joyce Ann Bradbury of the Red Cross. “The grant will go a long way in helping our community.”

“It’s about neighbors helping neighbors”, added Eury, “and being a good neighbor in a great neighborhood.”
