Teens Address Their No.1 Killer – Local School Works to Change Peers’ Behaviors About Safe Driving

Ohio, February 10, 2011 – Students from schools across the country and Canada are working together to create compelling safe driving communication campaigns aimed at convincing their peers of the dangers of risky driving behaviors. Motor vehicle crashes are the leading cause of death for teenagers in the United States.

London High School is among this year’s top Project Ignition winners, also known as Leader Schools, and was selected through a competitive process.

Project Ignition, sponsored by State Farm® and coordinated by the National Youth Leadership Council®, is a service-learning competition designed to help teens spread their own messages about driver safety and win grant money for their schools. The program gives students in grades 9 through 12 and their teachers the chance to work together to address the issue of teen driver safety – how it affects them, their community, and the world around them.

London High School’s Project Ignition team has received a $2,500 grant to implement a yearlong project, and another $5,000 to help with travel to showcase their project at the 23rd annual National Service-Learning Conference in Atlanta, April 6-9, 2011.

Project Ignition is just one teen driver safety initiative at State Farm, and helps drive the focus for National Teen Driver Safety Week, which is Oct. 17-23.
