Montana’s First Winter Storm In Here

As Brutus Settles In These Precautions Will Keep You Safe, Warm and Dry

November 9,2012 – Winter Storm Brutus has covered much of Montana leaving plenty of snow and freezing temperatures in its wake.

Space Heaters:

• Turn off all space heaters when leaving the room.
• Never use gasoline in a kerosene unit and only use kerosene in a well-ventilated area away from other heat sources.

Fireplaces

• Check all flues and chimneys before for leakage or blockage.
• Be sure the damper is open before lighting a fire and keep it open until ashes are cool.

Frozen Pipes

• Insulate pipes that run along outside walls, floors and ceilings
• Disconnect outside garden hoses and cover exterior faucets
• Open cabinet doors and run a small trickle of water at interior faucets

Driving

• Bridges and overpasses freeze first. Slow down and avoid sudden changes in speed or direction.
• Keep windows clear of snow and ice.
• Use brakes cautiously. Sudden braking can lock-up brakes and cause you to lose steering control.
• If you get stuck in snow, straighten the wheels and accelerate slowly. Avoid spinning the tires. Use sand or kitty litter under the drive wheels.
