Grant to Support the Car Care for Safe Driving Program
Morristown, NJ, April 10, 2012 - State Farm® Insurance Companies awarded Northern New Jersey Safe Kids a $10,000 Safe Neighbors Grant to help support the Car Care for Safe Driving Program. The grant funding will help reduce fatalities, injuries and property damage by educating young adult drivers on five basic aspects of necessary car care and safety.
“Educating young adults on routine maintenance and providing them with some tools to inspect their cars will keep their cars on the road, out of the shop and safer to drive,” said KJ Feury, Injury Prevention Coordinator. “It’s important for young adult drivers to understand that to be a “complete safe driver” you must have both safe driving skills and a safe car, not just one or the other.”
Significant progress has been made in the area if educating young drivers on the hazards of distracted, impaired and fatigued driving. These efforts have been very successful in decreasing fatalities, injuries and property damage. However, discussing vehicle maintenance has not been priority and many young adult drivers are not knowledgeable on the basics of regular vehicle maintenance. Therefore they do not perform or have routine maintenance completed on their cars. The Car Care and Safe Driving program will create an emphasis around the basic maintenance that’s critical to keeping a car operating safely.
