Wildlands Restoration Volunteers Receives a $10K Grant from State Farm®

Colorado (December 21, 2012)

State Farm Insurance has awarded a Good Neighbor Citizenship grant of $10,000 to Wildlands Restoration Volunteers (WRV) supporting the work and supplies needed to restore those areas heavily affected by the High Park fire. Those monies went to good use in early December 2012 during WRV's nineteenth restoration project this year.

"Without the support of State Farm insurance, these projects would not have been possible," says John Giordanengo, Colorado Northern Regional Director for Wildlands Restoration Volunteers. "On behalf of the land owners affected by the high park fire, the downstream users, and hundreds of volunteers, thank you!"

WRV along with their volunteers worked their nineteenth restoration project this year to protect those private lands affected by the fire through the spreading of over 20 million seeds, applying tons of mulch to the ground, and installing thousands of feet of erosion control structures. This work reduces the threat of flooding and landslides in the most severe burned areas, helping to protect roads, homes, infrastructure and water quality for over 300,000 downstream users in Greeley, Fort Collins, Loveland and several other Front Range communities.

"The good work Wildlands Restoration Volunteers does for communities affected by wildfire is an effort we fully support," says State Farm spokeswoman Angela Thorpe. "It fits very well with State Farm's mission of helping communities recover following a disaster like we saw with the High Park wildfire."

With the financial support from the Natural Resources Conservation service, The Denver Foundation, private organizations, and corporate sponsors, WRV is able to engage hundreds of volunteers, put tools in their hands, provide trainings for leaders, and purchase tens of thousands of dollars-worth of seed and mulch to make the highest priority restoration work a reality.
