North Little Rock, AR (June 25, 2013) Results from State Farms 2012 data show that Louisiana was the second highest state in the nation for the insurer for lightning related insurance claims last year.
State Farms spokesman for Louisiana, Gary Stephenson, said, We paid a little over $200 million in lightning related claims in the US in 2012. Of that amount, about $9.1 million was paid to our Louisiana customers. The money paid in Louisiana was from 1,989 claims.
Georgia was the leading state in the nation for lightning related insurance claims for State Farm in 2012, with $21.5 million paid on 3844 claims. Louisianas western neighbor, Texas, was number three with 1,825 claims.
Lightning is an underrated danger and the second leading cause of storm-related deaths in the U.S., exceeded only by floods. Even though lightning is weather-related and not a preventable event, there are ways to reduce your chance of damage from a power surge or fire.

In 2012 alone, lightning strikes cost nearly $1 billion in insured losses, according to the Insurance Information Institute (I.I.I.).
