Recently Youth United organized an event that raised over $4,000 to help a family realize their dream of homeownership. At their Hoops for Habitat event, held on Saturday, March 23, at the McGivney Center, community partners, legislators and corporations came out to support a great cause.
Local State Farm Agent Kevin Piscitelli stated It was uplifting to be a part of so much excitement. Seeing the foundation of the new house and meeting the future homeowner and his son really brought to life the reason we are involved in such an awesome program. State Farm has been a supporter of this Habitat affiliate since 2008 and we are proud of our partnership.
State Farm presented the Youth United group with a matching grant of $10,000, which means that they already raised that same amount towards their home project. Hoops for Habitat was a part of their overall fundraising efforts.
There were many community celebrities at the game, including Senator Andres Ayala, Jr., a longtime supporter of Habitat, Chris Smith, a former NBA player for the Timberwolves, Walter Luckett former NBA draftee to the Detroit Pistons and over 100 community supporters. The Bridgeport Boys Choir was also there and serenaded the group during the festivities.
State Farm Agent Omar Juarbe joined in the fun and stated, Watching a community come together to have a wonderful basketball event for the greater purpose is empowering for the entire community. The youth have learned an important moral lesson of helping each other within their communities to help achieve each others dreams and goals.
