June 23, 2013 Florida is hit with an average of 1.45 million lightning strikes each year, and the state also ranks as the deadliest - with 62 lightning deaths over the past 10 years. And lightning also carries a hefty price tag for homeowners: State Farm paid more than $200 million in damage for lightning claims in 2012, with more than $5 million paid in over 1,000 claims in Florida alone. According to State Farm claims data, lightning resulted in 1,163 claims with $5,111,357 worth of damage for Floridians.

Spring and summer are the times of year when lightning is most frequent.
