Indianapolis, IN (January 28, 2013)
Did you know that every 26 seconds across America, a student drops out of high school? In Indianapolis, the graduation rate is only at 74%, making it one of the worst in the nation.
To raise awareness of the epidemic and engage students to commit to graduate, five Indianapolis High Schools held youth-led graduation pledge drive challenges December 17th-20th.
One of these pledge challenges includes The Choice Bus, the nation's first mobile experience dedicated to reducing the dropout rate. The Choice Bus is a powerful experience-based learning tool that travels the country giving students, teachers and families a hands-on look at the importance of education along with the likely consequences that await most high school dropouts – prison. This customized school bus features a full-scale replica of a prison cell in the back of the bus. The 25-minute Choice Bus experience has been so successful that demand from schools and communities has resulted in the creation of additional buses. The Choice Bus has been experienced by more than one million people in 19 states.
New Horizon High School, Gambold Preparatory Magnet High, Shortridge Magnet High School for Law & Public Policy, Crispus Attucks Medical Magnet High and John Marshall Community High all had a rallies, activities and prizes to students participating.
Since March of 2011, State Farm has worked with community leaders, education advocates, individual schools and school districts to motivate students to be more (BMOR) than a statistic through the 26 Seconds campaign. For the past three years, State Farm has held a Dropout Prevention Summit in Indianapolis to work with community leaders to change his epidemic. This Pledge Drive continues that commitment to keeping kids in school.
