23-5-23 - the simple yet direct message teens can grab onto
It all started when a group of kids from Kalamazoo Central High School (KCHS) were one of 26 high schools across the country to be awarded a $2,000 Project Ignition grant. The group decided to organize a yearlong effort geared towards bringing driving safety awareness messages and information to their classmates. The goal is to help promote safe driving behaviors, especially as the end of the school year approaches with celebratory, but unfortunately sometimes tragic, events such as prom and graduation.
State Farm Agent Sabrina Pritchett-Evans, who has a senior at KCHS, brought the concept to the school. The teens took it from there and have been doing things throughout the year to get the safety message to their peers.
Even though her son graduates this year, Pritchett-Evans plans to carry on the program and its message to local teens as part of State Farm's nationwide Celebrate My Drive teen driving program, which takes place this fall during National Teen Driver Safety Week October 18-26, 2013. High Schools can sign up now to participate and in doing so are in the running to win $100,000 and the grand prize of a music concert for the school by a chart-topping music artist.
