State Farm® Encourages Disaster Preperation During Severe Weather Preparedness Week

Mississippi Observes Week February 4-8

Jackson, MS (February 1, 2013)

State Farm®, Mississippi's largest home and auto insurer, is encouraging residents to take steps to prepare for the upcoming severe weather season. There are a number of things that Mississippians can do to help keep their families safer and recover more quickly from a natural disaster. "The severe weather threat that we faced at the end of January is a reminder that the severe weather season is almost here," says State Farm spokesman Roszell Gadson.

Here are some basic preparations that should be taken:

  1. Create an emergency kit with water, food, first aid, medications, radio, personal and insurance documents, key contact information, map, cash, extra clothing, sanitary supplies, basic tools, and pet supplies.
  2. Make a plan and review it with members of your household, pick a safe place in your home where family members should gather during severe weather, make sure everyone knows were the emergency kit is stored, where evacuation and alternative evacuation are, and how and if utilities should be turned off. Make sure your pets are included in your evacuation plans.
  3. Be informed - listen to your local radio and TV stations and visit www.Weather.com for updated storm information, be alert to changing weather conditions, and always err on the side of caution.
  4. Make a complete video or photo inventory of your possessions for insurance purposes and keep these documents in a safe place (preferably not in your home or automobile).
    Download a Home Inventory Checklist
  5. Contact your insurance agent to review your policy - make sure that you understand what your policy covers and that you have adequate coverage.
