State Farm® Empowers NJ Youth with Service Learning and Students in Action

State Farm® Empowers NJ Youth with Service Learning and Students in Action

Empowering young adults is key to developing successful communities while impacting student achievement and civic responsibility. Engaging young adults as resources enhances their academic experience, cultivates civic responsibility, advances work performance skills, and constructs opportunities for growth and reflection. It's called service-learning.

Today, representatives from State Farm continued the insurer's commitment to service learning and education in the Garden State with a $15K presentation to the Community Foundation of New Jersey (CFNJ). The check presentation was held during CFNJ's Student Service showcase at Rowan University in Glassboro. "We make it our business to be a good neighbor and to support the communities where we live and work, said local Glassboro State Farm agent, Troy McAuliffe who attended the presentation. "Together we are building better schools through accountability-based education that identifies goals, measures results, and promotes collaboration."

The State Farm investment will be targeted to CNJ's Students in Action Learning Network. The Students in Action Learning Network (SIALN) seeks to empower and recognize outstanding youth service in NJ. Through a collaborative partnership with the Governor's Office on Volunteerism, the program uses resources to run a number of initiatives that accomplish this mission. This includes a learning network hub; an annual teacher conference; student conferences; and recognition events. To recognize outstanding service , one young adult and one teacher, will receive a special State Farm "Good Neighbor" Jefferson Award to be included with the NJ State Governor's Jefferson Awards. The two honorees will also attend the national Jefferson Awards Event in Washington, D.C.

Students in Action will also conduct a variety of service challenges throughout the school year and will recognize a total of 50 youth service projects at two regional NJ Youth Service Awards events in May.

The State Farm check presentation took place during CFNJ's Student Service Showcase event. With nearly 200 7th -12th grade student leaders attending, the showcase allowed students to present their service ideas through conversation circles with non-profit representatives on a variety of topics. Students then worked together to create and present service projects and generate financial support (or play money) from the others.
