Lima Noon Optimists Awarded $10,000 State Farm Grant for Safety City Renovation Project

Newark, Ohio (March 13, 2013)The Lima Noon Optimists accepted a $10,000 check today for their Safety City Renovation Project. The project consists of three different parts: reconstruction of the miniature city; expansion of the safety city classroom; and construction of the Survive Alive House, which is the newest addition to the program. Local State Farm Agent Ben Anderson helped secure the funding. “It's important our children have the tools and resources necessary to prevent and react to dangerous situations,” says State Senator Keith Faber. “State Farm's grant to help improve our Safety City program is a huge gain for the well-being of our families.”

The Lima Noon Optimist Safety City Team created the Survive Alive House concept to stimulate more realistic safety training, where children can put classroom instruction to use in hands on simulated scenario situations. In a crisis situation, people and especially children will revert to how they were taught in simulated scenario training when an automatic response is needed. During a crisis or life-threatening situation, normal thought processes shut down and the person/child will rely on hands on training to get through the crisis. The training will help the person/child from freezing up, which could cost them their life.

Many crisis or life threatening situations occur in and around the home, where many times children are lulled into a false sense of security. The Survive Alive House is a regular size, 2-story, training house that is going to focus on nine training areas. The training areas are as follows:

  1. Fire Safety
  2. Crime Prevention/Reaction Safety
  3. Gun Safety
  4. Home Accident Safety
  5. Poison/Medicine Safety
  6. Weather Safety
  7. Home Water Safety
  8. Internet Safety
  9. Home Medical Situations

The Survive Alive House will be a critical training facility for children as well as their parents. “Safety City provides invaluable lessons to children and families in our area making them safer,” says State Representative Matt Huffman. “State Farm has made a generous donation to the Lima Noon Optimists' Safety City to make repairs to this asset and we appreciate their commitment to Lima's youth.”
