Insurer's $12,500 grant goes to non-profit, Common Ground Relief
New Orleans, LA (March 22, 2013) Officials with State Farm have announced a $12,500 grant to Common Ground Relief (CGR), a non-profit located in the New Orleans Lower 9th Ward.
The grant is earmarked for the CGR Skilled Carpentry Job Training Program for Youth. This program teaches highly employable carpentry skills to upper level high school students in the Greater New Orleans area. This program is an expansion of Common Ground Relief's Construction Job Training program for adults, which began in 2009.
This newly developed program component will be taught by a skilled carpenter in Common Ground Relief's in-house cabinet shop as well as through actual hands-on home building projects.
CGR Director, Thom Pepper, said, In addition to learning specific skill sets, students will help rebuild New Orleans' housing stock as well as develop a knowledge for the unique architectural culture of the city.
Speaking for State Farm, Community Grant Coordinator, Jeff Davis, said, This State Farm Good Neighbor Citizenship grant will help Common Ground Relief provide high school students with employable skills. By helping youth be directly involved in building strong communities, we create viable neighborhoods that become positive building blocks for the future.
The Training Program will be open to students from three area schools, all of which serve low-income, under-served populations. Students will be chosen through an application and interview process. Students will learn all aspects of deconstruction, re-framing, creation and installation cabinetry and millwork. Equally important, students will be trained in tool safety, job etiquette, and other soft-job skills.
Common Ground Relief has been involved in clean-up involving over 3000 homes in the New Orleans area since Katrina.
New Orleans agents, Chase Dardar and Derek Morel, made the presentation for State Farm at the Common Ground Relief office on Deslonde St on March 22, 2013.
