The grant will be used to fund student stipends for participants in Coro’s Exploring Leadership program and those who sit on the Mayor’s Youth Leadership Council. In addition to providing financial support, the stipends help young people develop their responsibility as Coro “ambassadors” and foster skills associated with money management, budgeting and saving.

“We are very appreciative of the generous support of State Farm Insurance. This program provides an important opportunity for young people to learn about how their education system works so they can make it better,” said Scott Millstein, Executive Director of Coro New York. “Their investment in our work will have a ripple effect throughout the schools, campuses and the entire school system because of the efforts of our young alumni.”

Exploring Leadership is Coro’s year-long civic leadership program for New York City public high-school students. During the summer, Youth Ambassadors participate in a full-time program that introduces them to the world of education policy and reform and immerses them in leadership skill development. Throughout the school year, they apply their learning to take action on educational issues that affect their schools.

“Coro’s Exploring Leadership program gave me a chance to learn about issues and policies, voice my opinion, and explore the strategies of other organizations working for change. So, when I graduated from the program I went to work on creating change in my school,” said Exploring Leadership alumnus Kadheem Mcleod and a graduate from the High School for Public Service in Brooklyn.

The Mayor’s Youth Leadership Council prepares a diverse group of young people to serve as a critical advisory resource to City Hall while developing their own leadership skills. The Council gives youth input into city policymaking; provides young people with leadership training and creates a body of youth ambassadors to serve as liaisons to their peers and their communities.
