Denton, TX (April 26, 2013) Denton High School has been selected as one of the top 26 high schools from throughout the United States and Canada to receive a $2,000 grant by Project Ignition a service-learning teen driver safety program sponsored by State Farm® and coordinated by the National Youth Leadership Council®.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, auto crashes are the number one cause of death for teens in the U.S. Project Ignition is a youth- and schools-led response that connects academic goals to address the issue of teen driver safety through service-learning. This grant will support the Denton High Drive-a Palooza, one of 26 student-designed and student-led campaigns aimed at preventing car crashes in their community.
Drive-a Palooza will take place on April 26th from 2:30pm-5pm in the parking lot of First Baptist Church on 1100 Malone St. in Denton. The event will feature various educational and fun safe driving activities that local high school students can participate in.
Faculty adviser, Jennifer Phillips, said, We are very excited for an opportunity to let our students participate in some fun activities to gain awareness about the importance of safe driving. Sometimes we overlook the importance of educating our youth about this issue. We are really looking forward to this event that is open to 11th and 12th grade students, close to prom time, and lets them have some fun hands-on activities to remind them about the importance of not driving distracted or under the influence.
Denton High School will also be awarded a $2,500 grant for their participation in State Farms inaugural Celebrate My Drive® program last fall. Billed as the largest one day gathering of new teen drivers ever across the country, the Celebrate My Drive event in Frisco (one of about 400 events across the nation) drew over 800 teen visitors.
Congratulations to Denton High for this wonderful accomplishment, said Rendi Black, State Farms Vice President of Agency for the DFW area. We are grateful for students like these who, through Project Ignition and Celebrate My Drive, join us in promoting teen driver safety.
The 10 most effective Project Ignition campaigns that emerge from these 26 will be given the opportunity to receive additional funding (up to $7,500) and join the ranks of Project Ignitions 18 current National Leader Schools as they implement longer-term campaigns.
