Winter Storm Hits Area

Washington, D.C., (March 6, 2013) — State Farm® wants to remind area residents that just because the storm is over, doesn't mean you are safe from danger. Cold temperatures and icy roads can be dangerous following the storm.

“It's important to remember that you still need to take safety precautions, even after the snow stops falling,” said State Farm Spokesperson Anna Bryant. “Keep an eye on your property for damage from the heavy wet snow and avoid traveling until the roads are clear.”

The Red Cross reports around 70 percent of deaths related to ice and snow occur in automobiles. If you must be on the road following the storm:

Heavy snow can put a lot of stress on a roof; sagging ridgeline, drooping ceilings, water leaks, jammed doors, cracked interior walls near the center of your home and creaking sounds could all be a sign of issues.

If you are going outside, remember to wear proper clothing—a hat, gloves and warm layers of loose, lightweight clothing.

We also encourage residents to be a “good neighbor” and check on friends and loved ones to make sure they are ok.

If your home or your car was damaged during the storm, please contact your State Farm agent to file a claim.
