Cheyenne, Wyoming (May 1, 2013)
Cheyenne Regional Medical Center's Injury Prevention program Safe Communities, in partnership with State Farm, the Wyoming Highway Patrol, and other gracious sponsors, is excited to announce the first ever South High School Life After Prom Celebration, May 4th. This free event is a great alternative to unsupervised house parties for junior and senior high students.
"According to State Farm data, the month of May is the most dangerous month of the year for teen drivers in our state. Life After Prom is an excellent example of this community coming together to confront teen driver safety head-on," says State Farm Community Specialist Tamara Pachl. "Our commitment to combating the number one killer of teens goes beyond prom night." With a $20,000 grant from State Farm, Safe Communities has also purchased a new driving simulator that will be used for the first time at the Life After Prom event. This touch screen desk top computer replicates common driving situations such as noisy friends, heavy traffic, and pedestrians. The simulator can be set for texting or drinking and driving simulation as well. Safe Communities plans to use the simulator in other safety demonstrations planned throughout the year.
"We've filled the life after prom party with plenty of exciting attractions for the students, laced with safety in mind," said program coordinator Stephanie Heitsch. "Educational aspects will be sprinkled throughout the night to help reinforce the dangers of drinking and driving as well as distracted driving. For example, the Highway Patrol will be providing a scooter obstacle course to pair with impairment goggles to simulate the feeling of drinking and driving." Some of the attractions include a photo booth with instant printed pictures, a DJ, a movie area, and games. Students will have the opportunity to win prizes including an iPod®, a teen gym membership, and Cheyenne Frontier Days™ rodeo tickets. There will also be gift certificates to various bookstores so students can get assistance with purchasing text books for college in the fall.
The Life After Prom Party will be held in the South High commons area directly following prom, from midnight to 3 a.m. Entry will be free for all South High junior and senior students with school ID, as well as one date. Food will be provided on a first come first serve basis, however, the concession stand will also be open to purchase additional treats. 60% of the profit from the concessions will go back to South High to fund an after prom event for next year. WYDOT Highway Safety has been a greater sponsor of this event. Along with the initial funds, WYDOT has provided Highway Patrol Troopers to run the event, educational activities to participate in during the event, and prizes for the raffle. Without the support of WYDOT, the Cheyenne community, and State Farm this event would have been taken place.
