Youth Advisory Board Grants

The State Farm® Youth Advisory board is one of the nation’s unique philanthropic programs. Thirty youth from across the country are charged with designing and implementing a $5 million-a-year service-learning grant program. Grants fund specific community issues in one of five grant categories: environmental responsibility, financial literacy, access to higher education, natural & societal disaster preparedness, and driver safety. Grants must address a real community need, empower young adults, be sustainable, and incorporate all of the elements of service-learning.

National Council of LaRaza (NCLR) Service-Learning Grants

In partnership with State Farm, NCLR is developing and piloting a sound model for service-learning integrating the principles of service-learning in the daily curriculum in three of their network schools. NCLR’s service-learning initiative builds community development projects with students and teachers in Latino-serving schools through an integration of intentional teaching and classroom concepts. NCLR will complete the pilot phase in 2011.

Local Initiative Support Corporation (LISC) Service-Learning Grants

Over the past three years, State Farm has been a pioneer in the service-learning community development space by providing nearly $400,000 in grants to LISC to create sustainable service learning projects in several communities across the country. These projects can be built upon year after year to create lasting change in our communities. Examples of projects created with State Farm funding include those in which students work to reduce gang violence, teach local residents how make an impact through action and advocacy in their communities, engage in physical development efforts such as playground builds at low-income housing developments, and an after-school community garden and culinary arts program in which students grow and sell their produce at the local farmers market.

Project Ignition Grants

Project Ignition challenges students and their teachers or advisors to work together to develop a campaign to address the issue of teen driver safety in their communities. Grants of $2,000 are awarded annually to 25 public schools (including public charter and public alternative schools) in the United States and the Canadian provinces of Alberta, Ontario and Newfoundland that educate students ages 13 and older in grades 9 through 12. These service-learning grants are sponsored by the State Farm Companies Foundation, and coordinated by the National Youth Leadership Council (NYLC). Applications are accepted between August and November and grant winners are announced in December. Successful grant recipients implement their programs between January and April.

Based on the impact of their projects, in May, ten schools are selected as “National Leader Schools in Teen Driver Safety.” They are eligible for an additional $2,500 to continue their projects for a second year. These schools receive an additional $5,000 to help send a team to the National Service-Learning Conference where they showcase their work.
