State Farm Named One of the Top Employers for Military Veterans

State Farm has been recognized as a top employer for military veterans by two military organizations.

For the seventh consecutive year, G.I. Jobs magazine has named State Farm as a Top 100 Military Friendly Employer. State Farm was selected in the Top 100 out of more than 5,000 corporations based on revenues of at least $500 million. This places the company in the top 2 percent of employers nationwide.

The survey evaluated companies on recruiting and the results from recruiting efforts. Also considered were the companies’ policies for Reserve and Guard members called to active duty, veteran promotional programs, supplier diversity programs, and community and workplace involvement. For the first time the survey also evaluated best practices for retention as well.

For the first time, State Farm participated in Military Times Edge magazine “Best for Vets Employers” survey. State Farm received a bronze rating on the survey. It asked similar questions about the company’s recruitment, training, support and employment of veterans, as well as policies for employees who are in the reserves.

“We never underestimate the level of sacrifices made by State Farm associates who serve their country, nor the sacrifices made by their families. We are proud of them all,” said Ed Rust Jr., Chairman and CEO. “We are also honored to lend State Farm’s support along with the many State Farm associates who lend their personal assistance in a variety of ways.”

As of Oct. 31, State Farm has 31 employees who are deployed.

Recently, State Farm has participated in several activities dealing with the military.

  • State Farm participated in the first Army PaYs virtual career fair in February 2011. The company is a charter member company for the Army PaYs program.
  • State Farm is part of the Employer Partnership of the Armed Forces which is a job board available for all branches of military and their families.
  • State Farm visited the Pentagon this summer to talk to military officials about the opportunity for veterans to become State Farm agents.

State Farm partnered with World Team Sports in 2010 for the inaugural Sea to Shining Sea cross-country bike ride. The goal of Sea to Shining Sea is to honor the courage of service men and women, recognize the strength of the American spirit and challenge perceptions of how we view athletes. The riders were all veterans, many of whom were injured while serving in Iraq and Afghanistan. State Farm agents and employees supported riders throughout the two-month cross-country trip.

This Veterans Day, State Farm honored military veterans and their families with some fun at the Carrier Classic and a donation to help children whose parents serve in the military.

Michigan State and North Carolina faced off Nov. 11 on the deck of the USS Carl Vinson, the vessel that buried Osama bin Laden at sea. The event is the first college basketball game to be played aboard an active aircraft carrier.

As part of the Carrier Classic sponsorship, State Farm donated $111,120.11 (marking Veterans Day, 11.11.2011) to Scholarships for Military Children. The Scholarships for Military Children Program is a Fischer House charity.

State Farm Bank® on Ellen Show

State Farm Bank was featured on the Ellen DeGeneres Show – a tribute to Veterans Day.

State Farm Bank sponsored three scholarships for children of a military family who will be guests on the show. The scholarship is in connection with State Farm's support of the military and education.

The military family was reunited on the show after being separated for more than seven months. The mother and father are in the Army and have been deployed to separate locations in Afghanistan since April. The couple, who are stationed at Fort Hood, Texas, were reunited with their three children.

As a way of helping our nation's service men and women get to a better state, State Farm Bank is donating $45,000 toward a scholarship fund for three children. A check with State Farm's logo was presented to the family during the show.
