State Farm announced today the top 10 states for dog bite claims in 2012 - and Florida ranks 8th, with 123 dog bite claims at a cost of $7.1 million. Dog bites are a serious public health problem that can cause both physical and emotional damage to victims, and carry a considerable price tag in costs for communities.

A $19,000 State Farm grant to KIDS Consortium will bring a series of service-learning professional development experiences to Polk County educators, with a focus on STEM and the arts. KIDS (Kids Involved Doing Service-Learning) is a nonprofit organization focused on implementing service learning projects in schools and community organizations.

Forty-five Florida high schools are receiving $1,000 SADD teen safe driving grants thanks to funding support from State Farm. Motor vehicle crashes are the leading cause of death for Florida teens, and fatalities of Florida teen drivers and passengers increased 7% from 2010-2011, according to data.
