Primary Subjects/Skills
Suggested Procedure
Lesson
Objective:
Create awareness of causes and locations of home fires to
help students develop and share strategies for being safer.
Primary
Subjects/Skills:
English Language Arts (interviewing, interpreting information,
writing), Math (graphing, using statistics and data to draw
conclusions), Brainstorming.
Suggested
Procedure:
Ask students to survey parents/adults in their households,
or on their block to gather fire data.
The questions they will answer:
1. Have you ever had a fire in your home?
If so, how many?
2. Were you ever in a fire somewhere other
than your home? If so, where?
3. If the fire was at home, what room was
it in?
4. What caused the fire?
In class, chart the data and have students
plot the following statistics:
• Number of adults who have had a fire
in their home, and the percentage of adults who have had a
fire in their home. Use the total number of adults in the
households of your students as a base.
• Most frequent room locations of fires.
Find the percentages.
• Most common causes of fire.
Post-activity discussion
Ask students what conclusions they might draw about frequency,
location and causes of fires in their survey group.
Brainstorm safety measures that might
reduce the number of fires.
