Preparation:
Discuss and practice Stop, Drop & Roll; have students
look at the demonstration in the Command Center (Stop,
Drop & Roll).
Suggested
Procedure:
Have students make up a rhyme, a simple song or “rap”
about Stop, Drop & Roll to reinforce the technique. They
can then share with other classes. They can work in small
groups to produce different verses or as a class. If possible,
work with the music or band teacher to arrange a simple “orchestration”
for the class song. Here are examples of a short and long
version.
If your clothes catch fire,
Don’t run; don’t hop.
The thing to do is come to a stop.
Drop to the ground
Put your hands on your face
And roll like a log all over the place.
If your clothes catch fire, don’t
run or hop:
The thing you’ve gotta do is come to a stop.
Then drop to the ground, the floor, the
dirt.
Don’t worry ‘bout the mess --
Keep from getting hurt.
When you’re down, put your hands
right over your face,
Then roll like a log all over the place --
To the left, to the right, ‘til the flame is out.
And whenever you can, let out a
big shout!
It’s mighty-ighty scary, but keep control.
You’ll start being better when you stop, drop and roll!
