Lesson Objective:

Reinforce home exit procedures through participation, analysis and discussion.

Primary Subject/Skills:
Math, Critical Thinking, Problem-Solving.

Resources:
Fire Escape section of the Command Center

Preparation:
Conduct All the Right Moves lesson.

Suggested Procedure:
Ask students if they know how far it is from their beds to the fire exits in their home.
Explain to your students that you want them to measure and compare how far they would have to crawl to exit their home if a fire started during the night when they were in bed.

Discuss how they could measure the distance. Their suggestions might include using a piece of string, cardboard or paper, the length of the student’s foot or stride, a tape measure or ruler.

Discuss how an entire escape route can be broken into segments. For example, an escape to the front door might include the length of these distances:
1. From the top of the bed to the floor.
2. From the floor by the bed to the bedroom door.
3. From the bedroom door to the top of the stairs.
4. Down the stairway.
5. From the bottom of the stairs to the front door.

If students get these numbers, ask how they would get the whole distance. They would add the segments.

Write and copy a simple home assignment sheet for students to take to parents or an older brother or sister. Have students help you determine what the assignment should say, then print it out and make copies. Include a place where they can write their name and have a parent or sibling sign it. Also have them write down what kind of measuring tool they used. Make a classroom book of students’ completed sheets.
