Proper motorcycle maintenance advice.

Few things are as exciting and satisfying as a ride on your motorcycle. The unbridled sense of being out there on a scenic road creates a near permanent smile on most riders’ faces. But all of that joy can quickly be ruined if you’re not riding on a properly maintained two-wheeler. Use these handy tips below to ensure your next trip is a successful and memorable one.

  • Proper maintenance of your motorcycle is critical to its safe and reliable operation.
  • Each motorcycle has its own specific inspection/maintenance requirements.
  • The inspection/maintenance requirements and service intervals are covered in the motorcycle owner/operator’s manual and should be referenced to ensure all required periodic maintenance and inspections are performed.
  • Each time before riding the motorcycle a quick visual inspection of the entire vehicle should be conducted.
  • In addition to the quick visual inspection, fluid levels, tire inflation/condition, controls operation and lamp functions should be checked before each ride.
  • Motorcycles with chain drives may require maintenance more often than shaft driven models.
  • Washing/cleaning/waxing the motorcycle will not only make it look better but will also help to maintain its cosmetic condition and help it retain its value.
  • When not in use (if possible) store the motorcycle in an enclosed garage to protect it from the elements.
  • If the motorcycle will not be in use for an extended period of time you should see article “Prepare Your Motorcycle for a Bike Storage Shed” for additional storage and maintenance tips.

And remember, before you hit the open road, be sure to talk with your insurance agent to make sure you feel you've selected the right motorcycle coverages.
