What does motorcycle insurance cover?

We hope you always keep the rubber side down. State Farm insures most types of bikes, including:

  • Factory-built bikes
  • Motor scooters
  • Classic motorcycles
  • Minibikes
  • Custom motorcycles
  • Trail bikes/dirt bikes

State Farm motorcycle coverage options

Ready to get rolling? Most states require riders to have a minimum amount of liability insurance. And if you’re financing your bike, you may be required to have comprehensive and collision coverage as well. Bottom line, you want to make sure you have enough of the right coverage to protect yourself financially in case you have an accident, or your bike is damaged or stolen.

Here’s an overview of our most common motorcycle insurance policies:

Comprehensive

Offers protection against motorcycle theft and damage from fire, floods, vandalism and more.

Collision

If your motorcycle is damaged because you run into something like a car, a tree, a building, or some other object, collision insurance pays for repairs.

Liability

Pays for damages you cause to other vehicles or property, injuries to other drivers and passengers, and for lawsuits if you're sued due to an accident.

Ideally, you want to carry enough liability coverage to pay others for injuries and/or property damage if you cause an accident.

Comprehensive and collision coverage from State Farm also includes additional protections:

Protective gear and equipment:

Pays for damage to protective gear such as clothing, helmets and accessories worn to protect against bodily injury. Expenses are limited to $3,000.

Roadside assistance

Includes services like towing and the delivery of gas, oil, battery, or tires. You can also receive up to one hour of labor to repair your motorcycle at the location of its breakdown.

Trip interruption:

Pays for food, lodging and transportation if you break down more than 50 miles from home and your motorcycle is unrideable.

Add-On options to maximize your coverage and protections:

Uninsured motorcycle coverage

Pays for damages when an insured is injured in an accident caused by another person who does not have any liability insurance.

Motorcycle Insurance Coverage FAQs

Insurance can protect you and your motorcycle in the event of accident or other covered loss and is required in almost every state if the vehicle is licensed for road use. Please contact a State Farm agent to discuss your specific insurance needs.

The policy covers the insured rider (you) and resident relatives for use of a newly acquired bike, temporary substitute bike or non-owned bike. A "resident relative" can include someone who lives with and is related to the named insured or his or her spouse by blood, marriage, or adoption.

Insurance can protect you and your dirt bike in the event of an accident or other covered loss. If your dirt bike is licensed/registered for road use it will be coverage through a motorcycle policy. If not license/registered for road use, then it would be considered an off-road vehicle and covered by a recreational vehicle policy. Please contact a State Farm agent to discuss your specific insurance needs.

Yes, if comprehensive coverage is purchased with your motorcycle policy.

Other drivers using your motorcycle with your permission may be covered. Talk to an agent for more information about what coverages may apply.

Coverage may apply to your passenger. Talk to an agent for more information about passenger coverage.

Our motorcycle rating plan takes into account the seasonality of motorcycles, so cancelling your policy in the winter does not provide much benefit. In addition, even though you don’t ride your motorcycle year-round, you may still need insurance to protect it while it’s in storage. Talk to an agent for more information.

This is only a general description of available motorcycle insurance coverage and is not a statement of contract. Rates, rating factors, and coverages vary by state. All coverages are subject to policy provisions and applicable endorsements.
