Accident Assistance FAQs

Accident Assistance is a safety feature offered to private passenger auto customers at no additional cost through the State Farm app.footnote 1

You’ll enable the service through the “Overview” tab in the State Farm app.

Accident Assistance is a feature available at no additional cost to enroll. The information collected may be used in underwriting and to determine your insurance rate. For questions about how a claim would affect your premium, contact your State Farm agent.

Accident Assistance can be enabled and disabled from the “Overview” tab in the State Farm app.

When signing up for Accident Assistance, you’ll be asked to verify that you’re logged into the app with your own credentials. It’s important not to share login information with other members of your household.

It will ensure the correct individual is contacted during a detected accident. You’ll also be asked to verify the phone number we have on file for you. This helps us contact you during a detected accident.

Also, you’ll need to enable the notifications permission for the State Farm app for Accident Assistance to function as intended.

When Accident Assistance is turned on and we detect a possible accident, you’ll get a push notification asking if you’ve been in an accident.

If you tap the notification, the State Farm app will open and walk you through prompts to determine what type of help you need. This may include phone support, law enforcement, towing or opening a claim. If you don’t respond to the notification, we’ll try to contact you by phone.

If you don’t respond to the calls, and the accident detected was determined to be severe, we’ll ask that law enforcement be sent to the accident location to do a wellness check.

No. Accident Assistance is now available to all qualifying State Farm auto customers in the State Farm app.

If you respond you’re in need help after an accident, you’ll be connected to an employee for help with emergency services and/or towing. If you are in a vehicle not covered by State Farm collision and emergency roadside service coverage, a representative will provide a self-pay towing option.

Outside of the permissions required for trip recording (for example, “Location”):

  • Notifications must remain enabled for the State Farm app
  • Accident Assistance must be enabled in the State Farm app for each household device that would like to participate in the feature

If you ask for a tow through the Accident Assistance feature, a claim will be opened automatically if you have towing coverage.

In all other instances, you’ll be given the option to start a claim in the State Farm app.

Individuals will need to log in to the State Farm app using their own credentials to ensure the correct mobile number is on file and the correct person is contacted in the event an accident is detected.

To verify the account and contact information you’re logged in with, tap the account icon in the top right corner of the State Farm app to access your personal information.
