What pet insurance covers spans illnesses and injuries and the costs it takes to heal them. It does not cover pre-existing conditions. What exactly does a Trupanion pet insurance plan cover?

If allergies, cancer, heart disease, or other serious illnesses strike your pet, you can be in a position to provide them the best possible care.

Broken bones or bite wounds can result from accidents. Your pet depends on you to help them heal such hurts.

Whether hereditary or congenital, Trupanion can help with such conditions as elbow and hip dysplasia, Cherry Eye, thyroid disease and other chronic issues.

Diagnostic tests, surgeries, hospital stays, or even holistic therapy as long as it’s prescribed by a licensed vet for the treatment of a covered condition are some of the medical situations covered.

Medications, prescriptions, veterinary supplements, herbal therapy and even prosthetic devices and carts are included in a Trupanion pet insurance plan.

Common questions about dog insurance

When does coverage begin? Is there a waiting period?

Trupanion policies have a 5-day waiting period for injuries and a 30-day waiting period for illnesses. This means that injuries that happen 5 days after enrollment and any illnesses that develop 30 days after enrollment are eligible for coverage (as long as there's no evidence that the illness or injury already existed). Please note that any injuries that occur during the 5-day waiting period or illnesses that begin during the 30-day waiting period are considered pre-existing and not eligible for coverage.

What if your dog gets sick or injured during the waiting period?

If your dog is injured or gets sick during the waiting period before your coverage begins, Trupanion won't pay your dog's medical expenses.

How much is the deductible?

The deductible is the amount you pay out of pocket when you file a claim to cover your pet's medical expenses to care for a covered illness or injury. You can choose a deductible anywhere between $0 to $1,000.

Is coverage reduced for going to a specialist/emergency vet?

No, your coverage is not reduced if you take your dog in for emergency care or see a specialist. As your Trupanion policy states, you'll be reimbursed 90% for all covered claims.

If you are referred to a specialist or visit an emergency hospital, you will still see 90% reimbursement for all eligible costs. The veterinary exam fee is your responsibility, so if you are charged a specialist fee or emergency fee, this is regarded as the same.

How do I file a claim?

Trupanion offers you this dog insurance plan. You may file a claim, but know that 90% of vets will submit claims from their office via Trupanion software.

To file a claim on your own, call 855-518-1410855-518-1410 to speak to one of Trupanion's claim specialists.

2 Deductibles: A deductible is the amount you pay for each illness or injury before you'll receive reimbursement or payment for eligible medical expenses. Trupanion's deductible is a lifetime-per-incident deductible. This means that, once the deductible is met for a covered injury or illness, all future medical costs associated with that injury or illness will be eligible for coverage as long as the policy is in effect. You have the option to choose a deductible from $0 to $1,000.
3 The Trupanion Policy does not cover exam fees, wellness and preventative care, pre-existing conditions (including waiting periods), your deductible, sales tax (where applicable), elective, cosmetic or preventative procedures.
