Farm and ranch insurance vs. a homeowners policy

Here are possible scenarios when a farm and ranch policy may be better suited for farming or ranching customers rather than a traditional homeowners policy.

For this discussion, farmland includes tillable land, pasture and range land.

  • Farm and ranch coverage may help protect the variety of structures and equipment on your land
  • You may operate your farm as a “share-crop.” You and the person farming the land for you may share in the expenses, as well as the profits, from the crops or livestock
  • If you have more than 500 acres of cash-rented farmland, a farm and ranch policy may be needed

What does farm and ranch insurance cover?

This insurance helps provide a broad range of coverages for farmers and ranchers.

Household property

Helps provide insurance protection for household personal property in your dwelling, like clothes, furniture, and appliances if you live on your farm or ranch

Farm liability

Covers your legal liability up to the limits in the policy for damages because of bodily injury or property damage resulting from covered claims

Helps cover injuries to others that might occur on your property. Also known as guest-medical payments, it helps provide limited coverage if a third party is accidentally injured and needs medical treatment

The coverage may also extend to people accidentally injured by your activities on the farm or ranch

Losses insured

May provide coverage for perils (like fire, lightning or other weather events, explosions, riot/civil unrest, or vandalism) for certain eligible property

Inflation coverage

May increase coverage for home, contents and other buildings to help keep pace with inflation

Wildfire Mitigation Discounts

In California, policyholders who take proactive steps to help protect their home from wildfires may be eligible for one or more Wildfire Mitigation Discounts. Discounts may be available at a Community Level for policies located within designated communities. Or, for those policies meeting specific qualification criteria, discounts may be available at a Property Level. Check with your State Farm agent to learn more about Wildfire Mitigation Discounts.
