Discount Eligibility
You may be eligible for a discount for taking a defensive driving course if you have completed, within the past three years, one of the following types of driver courses:
- a defensive driving course of at least 6 hours that is approved by or meets the standards promulgated by the Department of Driver Services:
- from a driver improvement clinic or a driving school;
- from a driver improvement program administered by a non-profit organization such as the American Association of Retired People, the American Automobile Association, the National Safety Council or a comparable organization;
- offered by an employer to its employees and their immediate families.
- An emergency vehicles operations course at the Georgia Public Safety Training Center.
- You are at least 21 years of age, and have had no tickets or chargeable accidents within the past three years.
A certificate must be presented to State Farm showing the course was successfully completed.
Each driver is only eligible for one of the driver training discounts (Driver Training Discount or Defensive Driving Course Discount) on one vehicle.
Discount Term and Renewal
The Defensive Driving Discount (DDD) will begin at the inception date (new policies) or is applied midterm as of the completion date of the course (existing policies). DDD applies for a period of three years, at the end of which, the insured must provide evidence that the course has been successfully repeated to renew the discount.
Termination of Discount
DDD will end:
- At the first renewal date (following three years from the course completion date unless State Farm receives evidence of recertification)
- At the first renewal date after the Company is made aware of a moving violation by the qualifying driver.
- When an accident surcharge is applied to a policy as a result of a chargeable loss by the principal operator.
