What is rideshare coverage?

Using your personal car as a rideshare driver Transportation Network Companies (TNCs) such as Uber or Lyft may require additional protection they don’t provide. As a State Farm® Auto Insurance policyholder, you can extend your coverage.footnote 1

What rideshare driver insurance covers

Our additional rideshare driver coverage simply extends the coverage that you already have on your personal State Farm Auto policy. It also provides protection on top of the coverage maintained on your behalf by the TNC like Uber or Lyft.

You may receive the protection offered from your personal auto policy, including the limits and deductibles. Liability coverage is only extended while on the app so long as no ride request has been accepted and no person is occupying the vehicle for a charge.

If you ever need to file a claim for a covered loss, you’ll work with folks you already know. You’ll deal directly with State Farm.

What does rideshare driver coverage cost?

Our rideshare driver coverage generally adds about 15 to 20 percent to your current State Farm premium. But that depends on the coverages you've chosen for your personal auto policy, any discounts that may apply, and other rating factors. It's a simple way to extend the limits and deductibles from your personal auto policy to cover you while you are driving for a TNC (some state-specific requirements may apply).

Coverage in action

Let’s say your TNC app is on and you’re en route to pick up a passenger. Another vehicle smacks into you at the light. Rideshare coverage would help pay for damage to your car.

With rideshare coverage, you choose whether you have a deductible and how much it is.

  • A deductible is the amount you agree to pay up front when you make an insurance claim.
  • Higher deductibles lower your premium but increase how much you must pay out of your own pocket if a loss occurs.
